June Blog Post: Be A Happy (Non-Toxic) Camper

As the weather is getting nicer, you’re probably spending more time in the outdoors! Whether you’re grilling out or going on a camping trip, we want to keep you bug bite free, and smelling great, all while keeping your friends and family safe. We understand how important it is to keep your body safe. However, the most serious danger by far has nothing to do with bug bites, but instead is posed by the pesticides we use to keep the mosquitoes away.

What is it?

DEET is an insect repellent used in the most common bug sprays such as OFF!

Does it actually work?

Most people that used OFF! Bug sprays still reported getting bug bites. In fact, scientists don’t actually know how DEET works. They suspect that DEET masks the oils in our bodies that bugs use to detect us. The risk is not worth the serious harmful effects of DEET. Certain essential oils that repel insects can also help mask the oils in our skin with no potential health risks.

Why is it so unsafe?

DEET is so poisonous that even the Environmental Protection Agency says you should wash it off your skin when you return indoors, avoid breathing it in and not spray it directly on your face. If this chemical can kill mosquitoes, it can likely do some harm to other life forms too.

Short-term, people who use DEET regularly have reported experiencing symptoms including dizziness, difficulty concentrating, migraines and skin rashes.

Long-term and more seriously, DEET has been found to cause permanent memory loss, birth defects, and cancer.

Don't trade permanent neurological damage for temporary partial immunity to mosquito bites.

What should you use instead?
