Making the Switch to Clean Products: Why it's Important and How to Do It
We have all become label checkers. At the grocery store, we're weighing the options of organic versus conventional, comparing prices, checking sugar content, high fructose and GMO's. Grass-fed or factory farmed? Cage-free? We know all the words to look for and all the ingredients to avoid. We spend a lot of time making sure we aren't exposed to food related toxins. But why don't we put that same time and effort into our beauty and body products? If you look at a typical lotion from the grocery store, the ingredient list can look like this:
Water, Glycerin, Isohexadecane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Mineral Oil, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea), Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter, Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut), Tocopheryl Acetate, Glyceryl Glucoside, Fragrance, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben.
Some of the above ingredients are endocrine disruptors, and irritants to the skin, lungs and eyes among many other things. This is just for ONE body lotion. Add in your face moisturizer, toothpaste, hand cream, deodorant, body wash, hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, lipstick, powders - the list goes on. The average woman puts approximately 515 different synthetic chemicals on her body per day and almost 60% of those chemicals are absorbed by the body.
Just one spray of perfume alone can have up to 400 chemicals in it!

The FDA currently prohibits the use of eleven specific ingredients from cosmetics. 11! Yes, only 11. The FDA states “companies and individuals who manufacture or market cosmetics have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of their products.”
So, it's up to you to be your own health and wellness advocate. Luckily, there are a few resources that will help you like the EWG. A non-profit group whose mission is to "empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, we drive consumer choice and civic action."
Take a look in your shower, medicine cabinets, and cosmetic bags and do your own research. Do your favorite products contain synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde, Parabens, Aluminum, Benzalkonium Chloride?
Look for products that have simple ingredients that you recognize. Start small and switch your shower products first. Natural deodorant, body wash, shampoo and conditioner are the easiest to swap. Consider our HONOR THY | Deodorant in scents Lavender, Peppermint and Lemongrass available at our L | H website or Amazon.
Perfume is another easy switch - what essential oils do you love? Lavender, Lemongrass, or Frankincense? Blends of essential oils make for a beautiful, natural scent and because they are pure, the scent will last longer. L | H "Pure-fume", SilverLining, is a popular scent of 4 essential oils that blends safely with your own oils to create a unique scent.
Makeup can be a more difficult switch for some women because we have become conditioned to using the same products year after year. But natural makeup has come a long way, especially mineral makeup. Mineral makeup is actually good for your skin because it's derived from naturally occurring resources within the Earth. Mineral makeup is gentle, won't clog pores, lasts longer because it binds to the oils of your skin and creates a protective barrier.
